Generally, the mediator is called upon to intervene in disputes in which the parties have taken an adversarial approach to dealing with their conflict and have clearly identified positions on the issues and their desired outcomes. The role of the mediator is to help the parties move from their adversarial positions to an interest based, problem-solving strategy.
