40-Hour Family Law Mediation Training: Practical Training for Family & Divorce MediatorsFamily law mediation requires much more than an understanding of basic mediation theory.
Families entering mediation may be facing divorce, separation, child custody concerns, parenting schedules, financial uncertainty, property division, support issues, communication breakdowns, safety concerns, and difficult decisions that may affect their children and families for years to come. The 40-Hour Family Law Mediation Training offered through Mediation Training Center was developed to help professionals build the knowledge, practical skills, and professional judgment needed to navigate these complex issues with structure, neutrality, and confidence. More Than Mediation TheoryOne of the most important questions for anyone entering family mediation is: What does a family mediator actually do when a case comes through the door? A mediator must know how to begin the case, conduct an effective intake, identify the issues that need to be addressed, recognize safety concerns and power imbalances, facilitate productive communication, organize financial information, help parents develop workable parenting arrangements, explore settlement options, and assist parties in developing clear agreements. The goal of this training is not simply to teach students about family mediation. The goal is to help students understand how family mediation works in practice. What Does the 40-Hour Training Cover? The program includes 20 comprehensive chapters covering the family mediation process from the beginning of a case through agreement development, ethics, and professional practice. Training topics include:
Special Attention to Children and Parenting PlansParenting arrangements are often among the most important—and emotionally difficult—issues families address during separation and divorce. The training examines child custody and parenting plans from a child-centered perspective, including schedules, holidays, vacations, communication, decision-making, exchanges, and other practical considerations. Special attention is also given to families with children who have special needs. A traditional parenting schedule may not adequately address a child's medical care, therapy appointments, educational needs, routines, equipment, transitions, communication needs, dietary requirements, or other individualized circumstances. Family mediators should be prepared to help parents identify these concerns and develop parenting arrangements that reflect the actual needs of their children. Domestic Violence, Safety and Power Imbalances Family mediation also requires careful consideration of whether mediation is appropriate and whether both parties can participate meaningfully and voluntarily. Students explore domestic violence, coercive control, emotional and financial abuse, safety concerns, power imbalances, screening practices, caucusing, support persons, professional boundaries, and circumstances in which mediation may need to be modified, suspended, terminated, or referred. These subjects are incorporated into the broader training rather than treated as isolated issues because safety and voluntary participation can affect every stage of the mediation process. Practical Training Materials Students receive extensive educational materials throughout the program, including a comprehensive Family Law Mediation Training Manual, exercises, case studies, worksheets, checklists, agreement examples, and other professional resources. Upon successful completion of the full program, students also receive the Family Mediator Forms & Professional Practice Toolkit, containing practical forms, samples, worksheets, checklists, and resources designed to support professional mediation practice. The toolkit is provided directly to students after successful completion of all course requirements. Instructor Check-Ins Provide a Personal Connection Although the training is online and self-paced, students are not simply handed course materials and left on their own. The program is completed in structured sections with brief instructor check-ins throughout the training. These conversations provide students with an opportunity to discuss what they have learned, ask questions, review important concepts, and strengthen their understanding before progressing to the next portion of the course. Students also complete written quizzes and selected supplemental certificate trainings as part of the program. Who May Benefit From Family Law Mediation Training? The program was developed for professionals and individuals interested in expanding their knowledge of family and divorce dispute resolution, including: Mediators, attorneys, paralegals, law students, legal professionals, therapists, counselors, social service professionals, conflict-resolution professionals, and others interested in family and divorce mediation. Professional, court, training, certification, and mediator requirements vary by jurisdiction. Prospective students should always determine the requirements applicable to their particular state, court, employer, or professional goals.
